Malva Rosat

Parfum de Botanique

15ml Parfum Wand

Wildemalva (Pelargonium graveolens) with botanical trade spices, warm South African grown citrus, clove bud and golden Champak.

Behind what we have come to know as rose-scented geranium lies a journey that spans continents, cultures and centuries.

This fragrance holds the story of a plant who travelled far and became part of the language of perfumery, carrying her spirit across oceans and through generations.

Malva Rosat, like Wildemalva, wears the invisible crown of a nomadic Queen whose authority and sovereignty is not static, thriving where softer, more delicate plants would wither. Her home is in her heart, she carries knowledge of survival and is a healer, restoring balance to her community, wherever she anchors her strong and fibrous root system.

Wildemalva, Pelargonium graveolens, also known as Roosmalva, is native to the mountainous regions of Limpopo and the Western Cape in South Africa, as well as parts of Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

I believe this plant spirit to be a sentient protector of the heart and home. Creating a botanical perfume around a plant that belongs to places I call home feels especially meaningful to me.

Wildemalva has a personality entirely its own, carrying a distinctive green character. The soft, velvety leaves release a vibrant, spirited scent when crushed. The effect is immediate and uplifting, full of the greenness of life, yet simultaneously grounding and sincere.

I believe this plant spirit to be a sentient protector of the home and heart. Creating a perfume around a plant that belongs to the places I call home feels especially meaningful to me.

The Western world became especially captivated by Wildemalva, drawn to its resemblance to the rose and valuing the plant as a more accessible expression of something considered more precious. From southern Africa, Wildemalva travelled to Europe in the 18th century, where South African Pelargoniums were collected and cultivated.

From there, the journey continued to Réunion and Madagascar in the 19th century, where the story of rose-scented Pelargonium continued to evolve, contributing to the rich and distinctive rose-geraniums we know in perfumery today. Throughout this chapter, our lovely Wildemalva continued to open hearts…  through every comparison, every so-called refinement, every landscape and every attempt to claim its beauty for commercial gain alone.

Perhaps the journey was also part of this plant’s destiny, a journey that not even reductive comparisons or commercial interests could sully. In the volcanic soils of Réunion and Madagascar, the same plant spirit found new expression in the beautiful richness of Bourbon rose geranium.

And perhaps this is where the vibration of the rose and Wildemalva share something profound. Both are so easy to fall in love with, and both seem destined to travel far, exploring the many incarnations of themselves and finding their way into many hearts.

In Cape Malay and Cape heritage cooking, the fragrant leaves of Wildemalva have long been used to perfume cakes, syrups and preserves. This connection between plant, food and memory became part of the inspiration for the perfume.

South African citrus brings our pelargonium back under the southern sun with a Damask Rose in hand. Beside the notes of true rose, Wildemalva’s joie de vivre is such a perfect dancer that it becomes difficult to discern who is leading whom. Golden champak draws us toward a warm richness reminiscent of apricot jams, while clove and resins lend warmth, depth and memories of botanical trade routes.

Created from pure botanical extracts in plant-based sugarcane ethanol and free from synthetic ingredients, fragrance oils and nature-identical oils. Nothing synthetic. Nothing artificial. Only the true essence of nature.

Once you become attuned to the living character of natural perfume, even the finest synthetic fragrances can reveal themselves as imitations of something real.

These Parfum labels are handmade in the spirit of old-fashioned winemaker’s labels, and held to the bottle with a natural glue made from stone-ground flour, water, clove bud and cinnamon leaf oil, apple cider vinegar, and raw sugar.

Unlike synthetic stickers, they are vulnerable to the elements and may naturally soften or degrade over time. Please handle with care.

This Parfum is made with purposefully minimal filtration. Naturally occurring sediment may form over time. To filter too much from the raw material would be to sacrifice so much of its magic, character, and beauty.

Thank you for embracing the process of doing things a little differently.
